Journal 18 May 1978 Above Fca. La Bella, Dpt. El Progreso, Guate. shades white toward center. Many bank holes of Antimorpha, but fluked none. Did not seem a "birdy" zone. [Rain threatened.] I set 17 snap traps near holes along road bank (sheltered mostly) + under logs, + dry holes in trees. Early set 10. Rain. Rain. Rain. 19 May 1978. My traps held 5 mice, including Hetemysps, 2 kinds of Peromyscus (spec. catalog). Fog in a.m. but no rain. Occasional Hummingbird near house. Some black-bellied pipes. Heard togeras. Snailers near house; swiftly occasionally over woods. | Prepared to depart. | Rain had worked road, but now worse than before. Cabin to Don Teodoro's, 3'1/2 km. He not home. Drove down to big gran house, 2700'; 7.3 km from La Bella; apparently partly occupied, + uniform intent- not a "lost house." On down to highway, 20 km from cabin (+10 km E. of Reto bridge). On way down saw motmot, pride, ruddy ground clove - a good road for a bird transit. | Ascended to La Loma, almost 3000' in pine. Then they had cages w/ several kinds of half-grain pericoits, anaganti + jur. pasa, 2 llorazon half-grain, personally bought from local hunters. | We continued on to Quiriguá, stayed at Lemus' house. Early put a net across creek. 20 May 1978. Saturday. Quiriguá, km. 156, Dpt. B.V., Guate. No rain. Loose foggy clouds morning. In nets, Early had taken 5 chestnut-coloured snipes, Cyrtaulaides nuttallus; an other color (spec.); 398, all now breeding. | Visited Savitry family at km 155. John Campbell, Univ. Texas, expected hunt had not arrived. Drizzly afternoon. We prepared to depart tomorrow To Guatemala City 21 May 1978. Partly cloudy. Visited Savitrys + left a box of gear. Then drove S. to La Cambera + down to Solomá. Visited market. Then on to Reto- Cambar - road climbed to about 3000'; then descended to flat valley. Dry
