Journal [Finca La Bella] N. of San Augustin, Oaxaca 17 May 1978. new cattle range. Wife ran school in Santa. Small nice house; her pitbull. Good English. Let us camp on his land in coffee grove at this level, rare tree, pinus or liguidambar. Road continued about 4 mi up another 1000'. Possibly br-l forest above. Cloudy, sprinkling, lightning. Teodoro kept outside, did not allow hunting; but little knowledge of animals. / Rained an hour in late evening. 18 May 1978. Finca La Bella, of Don Teodoro Englishment. Cloudy but cleared gradually. Heard parrots. Suga & Australian color plants between coffee bushes. T said road up passed old log cabin, & many branches beyond. We drove up road; 4 u.d. roads in parts. 2 km to edge clearing extent forest at 6000' (5300' at house). Tall forest w. branches high up. Slope of "chute" at side - T said 180 truckloads of such timber cut last year. 6500', entered another clearing below log cabin. Cabin old but clean; roof waterproof galv. chute; good camp, at 6700', start of br-l forest above. House 10 m. square. We parked at house & walked up rough dirt road through forest. About 3 km. to 7400', where there had been recent logging at foot of a pine (came a most pseudotsolum) stretch. One branch road extended ever farther; we walked to 7600'. Mt. tops still far above to N. Co. Lindor? Heard tigran. (T said these are guitzgoli, howling) but saw no tracks large mammals (see racoon, below). Few bird calls. Saw chestnut capped athletes. Found a dying Aphelocoma unicolor on road (specimen). Scandal branchide; Eric found 2 salamanders in about 4 hrs. Branchide light thin on ground, but almost absent in many sections. I briefly saw 2' dark gray snake on ground in woods. Three flower among banks of road we flushed a robin - sized dark gray bird from nest (cups of moss) w. 2 (one 3) eggs, white w. four spots. Tail gray w. white tip on center feathers,
