of wals; at other times, several in minutes. Best luck in big bromeliads at edge of course. Many were in plants lying on the ground, a new fallen tree, partly dry. Also toad frog in bromel-iad (ESK collg). Drum deplorans fairly common on stumps,
or at previous locations at similar altitude. Few birds seen or heard. But bluebirds in openings. Swifts flew close at times;
apparently Stropostrome, w/ complete white collar, did not put out net
(pro catch)
in yards. Rain in late evening. Martes de Moran.
17 May 1978. Cooler after rain. We prepared to depart for Honduras.
Ontakes heard in morning: Apparently no Alouatta here (from head; rum said same). / Down down to Capellan. Stopped on sole
ridge about 4500+ took an old woman in bromeliad (ESK set).
Not day later. Briefly visited Mrs. Varga + Laird near highway. Ran then to w., enquiring about roads to N: Apparently none to Alta Santa Clara now (walk from Teculutan). But head of road N. of km 100
(1300')
(mengardonia) via Estancia de la Virgen. That proved to be small village, when said road went N. to Fca. La Vega y montana. We stuck up dirt road, steep + rough in spots. From town, 8 km. to get + home at 2600': about 1 km. above, a large old green house (said built
present
dry from present owner) on promontory. Rain started 2000'. Dry valley but strips green trees, mainly palms in bottom. Milpa palm
& small pine. No bromeliads. Coffee at 3700': 15 km., white wooden house at Fca. Santa Clara. Avocado + coffee planted together.
Oth. areas cleared & solidly broken. Some bananas by huts at
4700', 5200'; about 17 km., sharp corner & Fca. La Vega. Driven by Sr. Don Teodoro about 75 yrs, Qermana, the loner in Guate. Family again cultural engineers on S. coast. Many years here. Mostly coffee, but
