Journal 14 May 1978. Sunday. NE of Sanz Apt. Zapa, Guate. stream, 100 m lower than home. Chicken & dogs in yard. No luxury. Vegan seemed intent on conservation; intended to hold broadleaf fruit & it's big trees. Planned to plant beans & coffee & pines. Said had watched all life to develop this place, a wide valley facing SE. Named Fee. Mister de Moran (area llamado de Morgot on map). Trail to El Zanco starts here. Must talk w/ into night. We slept in house. 15 May 1978. Monday. More people arrived. One man to look for plywood-sliced tree & identify others (arm. Modernos in Molelos mrs. Baranera). Cile looked for salamanders. I & she went with 5 men to look at tree bricks in matatua, afost. Descended to lower stream & ascended trail, said to lead U. to his beans. Local helper, Don Carlos, carried a bottle of ? & was soon drunk. Trees huge-some 3m. diam. Identified by looking at bark & wood. Could walk about fairly well in fact as undergrowth thin. We wandered about & had difficulty finding trail back. In about 3 hours in front, saw a beard almost no birds. Much less lively than Ue. del Moro. The man said no codo de matu bee, portegir, but palma, arve, dillo, pirote, garnero, corom, tepicantle. Said a rattlesnake kill ed nearby recently & used for medicine. At elsewhere, said both snake& salamander poisonous. Many biting gamador; my ears would ear from bites. I back to ranch house & rest. Cile had taken about 30 salamanders (FSK catalog). I put out 15 snip traps near logs & holes at edge front, & set 1 net near stream. No rain. 16 May 1978. Tuesday. My traps took 2 big Peramegnum ofani birds or at Chilanco; drink fare & refound chest. Described. One sternia in net (spec.). I helped Cile search for salamanders; we got about 40 in 4 hours. At one point, only on 2 in an hour.
