Jours! 14 15 May 1978. Sunday 5400' N/E. El Calvario O.P. Zacapa, Guate. Clear & dry; light breeze. No catch in net. Found records in coca field in night an owl (?); single muffled grunt. Saw Caelipha blue jays & Dendridae. Yesterday, big red bird woodpecker in bedroon. Sank! We proceeded to descend to highway. Encountered no traffic. Acer woodpecker & flicker at upper levels; vireo at bottom. About 1500', at bend + stream, a motorist was on way up. Faintly tame. Had to go through locked gate, w/ gatekeeper (we said friends of Flora). On to highway w/ his Honda, very small town w/ no market. Then went S. to see garage + shop. Good market; hot. Repaired 2 flat tires. Then look to highway E. + on to Jerez river; walkedback 2 km. to side road to farm + went N. Sent beetland habitat line along the way. Narrow plastered + white w. tile 1800' roofs. At an settlement, road renamed (Espinillas?). We talked w/ local men. They said road went up to Planader, where ranch of Julio Vargas. We ascended road; steep in parts, dependent; 4 w.d. esential. Wound up through houses + up to pinos, about 2700'. Pinos burned + smoking, though roadside sign on tree urged fire prevention. Spaced farm, mostly Eri't dehl. A summit at 4800'. The down + up to 5600'. Oaks, liquidambars, second growth low fascet. 5100'; occasional bamboos. Many old logging roads to NE; rods con + bean; cuts in face slope. Again with liquidambar. Then got the farm; a few Indian huts. Broadleafed mataora visible to N, down 5500'. at 5800', a gate; then road down to Vargas home about 5500'. A few Indian huts. Cattle. Cut over slopes w. mataora above. Large leafed bamboos in trees. A clear stream. /Vargas, 35 yrs., at home + friendly. Had 45 colomennas. Pini logging done, but new cutt- ing levels in burn. Road continued up for 2 km. beyond house, but only to edge of cut area. Sidewalk down to E. to another clear.
