Journal 12 May 1978 Vo del Mayo Dpt Zapoca, Guatemala. Dendrocolaptidae (straight bill; spots visible anteriorly). Trogon again at same spot, holding me (rest). Antrodalmus w. food? in bill, went to hide in bunch of rock. I launch tree at edge forest, Aphanotriccus unicolor (2). Saw a Scinax, brown, medium size. No fly stickers noted, but some webless. Mystacinus loud call; fluttering or gargling; G c, one of large bird, in damp canopys. Took some photos of forest. Road goes about 270 around V. del Mayo. Tracks - look like small fox, in rock. Dropping - 4" erigeron shape; contained feathers, 1 mammal hair, insect parts (= ?). Kluss said to have saw mill in CI Ranchy, impregnating plant in Rancho. Wahnman looked for snake here, the brown "Trogan" (Bulthous). No streams, but some simulates crossed road; enough for cooling. Swifts, flew close to campsite! Erik searched for salamanders in Rancho and got about 3, but I searched on banks and got one (head cut off; ESK stated). We searched near S edge of the forest patch over clearing + burn; several broad lived handlings up to 12 above ground. Many other types epiphytes in abundance in forest. Cold & windy. Moved camp, down to 6500' in mixed pine (mostly) & oaks on ridge. Much drier there. Saw some woodpeckers, Jays; heard trogon (7 amber type). Saw flicker. At about noon, one Genus amphibian sound over the pass (pine yard) and cried. I found 2 salamanders + 1 snake (all ESK stated) in Rancho; Erik found about a dozen salamanders, apparently 2 or 3 species, with about 4 same hand walks. Elric & mosquitoes at times, but generally clean & lazy, not hot at 6500'. We drove S to San Lorenzo. Visited mobile quarry. Took photos (close of V. del Mayo); several roads visible through cleared area S of Vo del P. Camped near site of 9 May. Clean & dry. Set up 2 bait nets, one near mouth of cave leaves. Net took: hummock blue cross, red face possible w. black tip; orange tail, white throat, green darking straight bill); released.
