km to a summit, then logging power. From there, 3 hrs. foot to Santa Clara. We returned to highway & went E. to Santa Cruz. Spectra tire on back of car blew in the heat, stopped to get repair. Melico + comadres km. | Went E. about 2 km. & took side road to Ojo del Agua & El Manuel. Dint road, some trucks. Now narrow in guadua, dry area. About 2500' (1000' at Santa Cruz), rocky, few owlets, collected leguan or bullock (EJK catlog), a Chlorophia. Day settled down then. Much of country had been burned recently, including steep slopes. (Laney, male w. black throat, yellowish bar; no yellow in tail). 3000', first noticed pine trees. 4000', pines + oaks, ovens. ovens; a few cattle; acorn woodpeckers. But still much burned over. Road switchbacked; often steep & rocky, but 4 wd. in jeep not needed. At 4700, road flat; spreading palm (?) w. hanging lichens. High limestone cliffs (abts). Road up past foot of cliffs, 5500'. Oak forestal w. bromeliads, mostly narrow-leaved types. Pine being logged. Northy <16" dbh. 5700'; road flat or eased mercedesia. About 20 small houses at San Lorenzo. ovens; no streams. Much pine area burned recently. Camped near limestone sink & bromeliad trees about 1 km. before S.E. saw jeep (Anisopha? - fly buzzing note), especially in pine browse. Saw Campyl- obryder gantus among bromeliads. | Cules I net about 15 times each, & we put up no mist net. Traps among trees, brush, eastern, & gray bullock.
11 May 1978. No rain, but dewy. Net took 2 Chlorophia (EJK cat). Trap took about 0 Campyurus (4 years), all same. Mostly near lake in ovens. Saw & caught 2 brownie in pines; carried some as at Chilons, browse. I saw and 20+ cedar waxwing perched in broadleaf among pines. | We gathered sk- armed bromeliads, mostly under 12" leaves, but no catch. Many mozzages on ground but not examined. | Talked to man at store at San Lorenzo. He said road continued on their hills to Jacona. Comment park told me.
