Journal 1900 m. 8 May 1978 Nte. Chiasco, Dpt. Baja Verapaz, Guatemala. about 10' wide. Heard caprimulgids. 9 May 1978: Foggy dew. Not took 2 bats (sp.), 1 Tordus grapii (re- desed). We walked up canyon & a mile up a bulldged road to about 6400', to end. Opparently logging road. Near end, pines to 2' diameter (5 milly leaves, 8" long; 4" immature cone). Saw had large broadleaf on trailer, but apparently limited pine area, on N- facing slope. In canyon, mixed w. large broadleaf tree. We pulled down broadleaf & searched them for colomenids. Most from pine trunks. Took about 21 by room (ESTK catalgy). Very dry day now from lack of rain. Flecked funeoid (autumulus?) from hole in road bank twice; hole 8' up. Took a large n rod; albina? (ESTK catalgy). We returned to Mte., & drove back to Chiasco. Many Liquidambar trees, large & small, along road, & several clear inches. Then descended to W. to area of Montario, where camped near clean stream on sidewood at about 1500 m. Some logging w. Olden 1/2 mile upslope. Few of mixed small pines & oaks & Liquidambars. We cut out about 20 manual traps, no catch. Saw 1 small bat evening. Very dry. No results from turning logs, rocks, rotten wood. Used foggy smoky haze, but steve out. Rain about midnight. Nte. Montario . - to Santa Ger. 10 May 1978. Hard rain for a few hours straight. Cut traps near dry creek spurs. Red held 3 Peramyeus (CK catalgy). Mine near 6' wide stream held 0. Heard tiger (rakianum?) calling, 5-9 "chows," about 6 a.m. Ontebei heard. We dried out so foggy cloud; first rain for 2 weeks a row, I think. Yesterday we got a few tiny fish from stream near Chiasco; bigs large said cold cayen (2'-3"?) w. looks kind? Etatic? We departed & drove down to El Cande. Then E., searching for good roads up into Siena. Drancled road leading to San Augustin's Took side road to El Gate, underdeveloped older, rough dirt; trucks w. logs. Not day. Talked w. locals & truck men. They said road had slide & cannot drive to Santa Clara. But can drive on 1-1/4
