26 January 1972.
Mentioned someone (P.Vega?) giving tiger skin to someone. Confirmed that
would drive to Campeche in driest season, May. We saw a fox, a roe,
and a jaguarundi (?) cross road in the 4 hr. drive.
Thurs.
27 January 1972. No meal, & Vega not back; tho I've talked with his
wife. We took bus to E. Zapata, on route to Campeche. A man on bus
said road fairly new, and that formerly they used mules or mares for
two travel between cities. From bus, near river, saw coconuts,
agrote, rather birds, a large aguiara perched in brush. Were sun-

talked w/boy. Angel's Gutierrez. Tried to find out number of tiger
licences issued; he squirmed around, said no statistics. But said
that new law would require hunter to get license in state where
they hunted. He was vague about even with tigers & crocots, but
indicated area north and south of road east from Caceres. I
asked him how shops could sell untold skins - he shrugged
and said laws are "very flexible." Only information he had was
game law for 1971, + season, although he seemed to be sympathetic.
I inquired at tourist office - again, friendly, but vague.
Thought tigrillo in all state. Said alligator rare - but
many water birds around Laguna del Carmen. We departed
