7 May 1978. Sunday. Near Tamaluv, Dr. Aito Verapozz, Groto, and white hawk in his area. No her & grun haps; some hunt them. Uncertain that they know salamanders. Mell said Basiliscus laid eggs at this season in sand by his road. We saw queller & wrena near house. Some potliver wood in canyone. I pulled leaves on platvane but found no vertebrates. Large house & seemed to welcome visitors; roof up steep & rocky. No ant-roquiguer or mantis dragging. This family says no slumber. But weasel (vs tayra or quinea recognized). Aguirre - they say 2 or 3 birds; I saw some seen under pinos near house. We saw basiliscus on road along Tamaluv. Visited a weaving shop in town, who were huipiles. Returned uphill in late afternoon & down to La Presita. Black-colored swifts flying near road. Stillt till no rain.
8 May 1978. About 6 am. I saw 2 yellow & black orioles in planted canyone in yard; apparently I. chrysogaster. Nearly clear dry day w. breeze. We pressed to leave for Chileno & locations to north of Sanis coast. Visited w. Paul Denity near La Urrion. John Campbell & other of Arlington, Tifer, due here soon. A long pale owl flushed by him & others in trees along creek. Jays (Christopher?) in trees near house. Flechier common. Drove to Fia. San Jorge & talked w. Rodolfo. He had 2 legads & 1 salamander in formalin for us. His rented house in Salama. He & father contemplating sale of finca soon. Still logging royal & some other trees; when, tectoa, trucha here. Also Indians collecting tree ferns each about 3' long; Rodolfo said recently sold 5,000 of them. We drove to Chileno up very dusty road to Fia. Miranda, about 10 km. Grassy pasture in bottom; brush or burned brush on slopes; second growth forest about 30' high above, then taller forest. Only a couple of shadows, but Indians bringing in tree ferns loads, each about 1 x 1 x 4' (said with 1 Q.). Took photo. Cordig prominant. Awoodshrub w. ripe fruit; tree to 40' tall. Burned hills planted in corn & beans; plants < 1 ft. tall now. Blebbleries ripe & abundant. Set up 2 mist nets near slow stream
