Journal 5200' 2 May 1978. 8 km 6E Puulha-Dpt. Baja Vapaz, Guate. We prepared to depart for city tomorrow. Clear calm evening. 3 May 1978. Left by car about 0800. Saw roadrunner (2) near km .115 in pine oak zone; another m. km .100. I also first hills W. of El Rancho, in spring desert, I saw at least 3 Olatum (chayote?), large mimic q. zizina. Delay for 3/4 hr. for road construction; calm, amiable, between El Rancho. W. km .22-90, NW of El Rancho, we saw 2 Monstros in spring breaking new road. Delay for road work; reached Santa about 1 p.m. Turned in VW panel truck. Stayed at Swiss Chalet. I wrote letters and got my collecting papers from Gonzalo Cruz Garcia. Cool evening. 4 May 1978. Clear day. With Snn + Marsha H., went by limo to Antigua, about 43 km. Saw them some acacia trees where I saw jays. Good market for produce & handiworks at Antigua. Ruins of old buildings & churches. Looked for Jacques Van Kerkh, who was away. Returned to Guatemala, Chalet Guiza. Cubs arranged permits for export of live fish. (UEFP participants) 5 May 1978. Marsha H. + Bill D., departed on Pan Am, former taking live fish as carry- on luggage. I invited Rodinco Anguiste & El Solito co. in Maya City. While there, they received letter from Vollman stating that WAF had turned down S.de las Merias proposal. Rod suis was much more optimistic than Doris, about eventual funding. He was currently much interested in bats & planned a looking spend on bats. He said bats in some new Xeloa(?) N of Colan, where the central oil co. operating; might arrange visit for me. I'd get Maria Petal fund from Metacil, & we (w. Cubs too) drove back to Quince ranch, arriving about 24h. Clear & dry then; no rain for many days. New gp. 10$ parts flew over road about km .90. To near Tamahy, Alta Vapaz 6 May 1978. No fog; cool. We spent morning searching banana leaf for salamanders in area 1 km SE of ranch house, in 3 very isolated gp. tree or slope. Obtained ca. 20; generally I took 8 in 15 bananas. Many at night reach by hand. We drove then to Tecolutla to shop. Then down Polochic road about 65 km. to Fancia (+ Dña Maria Santa Cruz) Onder Rojo, of Smulmans Garcia, who wanted to visit about 4900; near road
