21 April 1978
Upper Blochis Valley, Opt. Albarveroz, Costa Rica.
to Turumi. Here side roads, probably to finca. Continued about 3 km. Taken Turumi,
then took side road up 4 km. To Finca Esperanza, about 900 m. Dr coffee handler
on lower finca & saw Atlapetes (darky face). Arrived at finca near dark. Talked w.
Almiciado, Herrera. Camp on lawn was not tough, w. low room + both visible
alongside. Rain at night, increased to heavy rain + entered a few hours we all
moved into house. /Cricetus loud catatimian sound as we came up road; they
are about 3" long. Saw no caoutchouc wastes at incandescent lights.
22 April 1978. Rain stopped but present, gradually brightening about 0900.
We took antelopes walks on road. Saw two colonies of wiggles, w. birds visiting.
Looked at banana trucks for lizards. Also looked in coffee nursery. Herrera showed
us several lots hanging from joints in basement of the coffee "beneficio". He had about
6 kinds small snakes and a whitish 8" salamander preserved inside; all from
here. He said many catatimian in hills nearby, type just like across valley to N. Many
terpsinians here. But seen one clean (Luribajon), or making up. But mapudels, grown.
Said type killed same blochis a few months ago. He had captured 3 brockens
from from another finca. / Live & I saw: 2 Geocorys on trail, Divius around,
2 avis, Tiaris alvivia at close range, a Myodesta w. drum in bill. Heard many
Cathar in hills. Tall fruit started about 100' above houses to S. / I pulled local ban-
ana leaves near house and found 7 salamanders in about 2 hrs, some +3" above
ground, some in water at bottom. Wiggly catatimian. Also took a thin snake (55K cately).
Net took nothing. About 6 p.m. searched about 5 more banana stalks & took 1 more
small salamander (55K cately). In eve, Cribet Hill put mist net in lower finca's last
net & took about 6 lots. They also took toads, frogs, & a salamander (in clay wall).
evening, they took 4 salamanders in banana trunk. /Strong winds above
cold late in day. Herrera says mapudels are a pest & he will cut down those
they nest in. No rain at night.
Sunday.
23 April. No rain + good dew. Calm morning. Keep specimens. Swop tapes today
