Journal 20 April 1978 San Antonio to nr Purilhas, Dst. Bajo Verazze, Gto. Cub & Bill took about 6 new salamanders from elm clump. Cub reports seeing at least 3 Litoria infuscata in flight. Heard saw Caridox. Morning chorus of Orthos in fog. Strong scattered clouds. No catch in crop traps by Jed & Marsho. Two Capraimylus taken in streamside net. Heard much calling previous evening, early to late. Birds in bush or burro and not noted on trails or roads. Codence of call like: bob-white, Cyathic white. Prepared to depart for Chileno. Droppings of fox-size on trails; appeared eaten fruit, black. Descended & drove to Chileno. Many Thamnus decipiens on former of sticks (& trees) in town. Discarded thru pine oak grove to highway, about 3 side roads to 5. Area of Monte Rio, about 5300'; may be good for camo! On to Purilhas & Quetzal Pictures, where set crop traps to E. of road & stayed for night. Cool by 1530. Lazaro Chigui in charge but several workers here. Est +700' elev. Set 25 crop traps; Marsho & Jed set other, even road E. of reserve; Cub & Bill set other & cut trailside (look for salamanders) beyond N. boundary. Walked about 1 hr w/ trail; graded smoothback, much of it gravel. Varied vegetation but little sign birds or mammals. Saw Andeli. Returned to palm-thatched home; now has 8 lizards w. mattress. Brief rain showers eve. After dark, I looked for frogs w/ light & got one w/ white large spot on thigh; it was on Lily-like leaves 3' above stream water. Heard two frogs but saw none. /5 p.m.- saw w/ white dorsal collar; slightly folded tail= Streptophorus? 21 Apr! 1978. Friday. Smoky haze, calm. 0600 saw flash (2+ small panther flies). Two traps in house took 2 most-sized Peromyscus. Crop traps took 3 large & 2 rod. Peromyscus. Prepared specimens; left 2 kind Peromyscus in formal for Naido. Cub & one other hiked up trail 700' elev, but it did not reach summit & no trail beyond. We talked w/ Lazaro Chiguii about rocks & animals. Then departed 1 pm for Tasti. Saw gpe. 10+ black swelter on flood plain before Tasti, & 10+ cattle egrets. From Tasti to San Julian, where started down dirt road to Lancha. Before 5, saw Barbipane nets hanging from two over road, w/ birds waiting them. Now well built wall & fences on N. side road. Saw the rospadele gpe. or something
