Journal 18 April 1978. 0 km ESE Chilcoy, 406 Baje Verapaz, Guate. 6000' avg. + 500' above sea level. bone spoke from away river. saw lost tail quickly; head thrush. saw small swift gp. (10?), + gp. maters (?- glide mud; wings unnamed new body). at time good invisble in grass. / Camped at 1630 near stream. Set out 2 nets. I put 2 trap type near stream, grass, bushes, Mango & fed put other on. Erik turned over 6' log in grass 5 m. from creek + found a small salamander! Much calling of Myctiliumus on into the night. Clear, & 3/8 moon. 19 April 1978. Dark night + dense mist fog in morning, but soon rose. Nets held o (we saw a head so late evening). Only trap catch was 1 bothodactylus (CK spec.) Steamy white clouds + warm. /I he & I stayed at camp. The 4 other hiked ESE up to cloud front to look for salamanders in bromeliads. Good part way ups, but uncertain quality. (Im walk lost me up trail + road, drew few (?) note at several points. Heard, took a frog in night, but saw new light.) /Strong low chorus including apparent Onthelia, but many other kinds too. Yet, softly fog cleared I saw few.) /I've picked blackberries & made jam. /I turned over logs here + there; saw a snake under me. Saw on 2" lizard with rufous flat caud + black stripe on side in thick deep grass. /I found a few dozen bromeliads in clumps in a group dry stream. Pulled down many + & searched for salamanders. Found 12+ in 2 hours. None over 10' above ground. One on ground. Some small, about 10" tall. At least 3 in one plant. /About 3 pm Erik & other returned from cloud front. They had taken 12+ salamanders + 2 frogs in bromeliads. /Nasty warm calm day, but not overly hot. /We again visited the local bromeliads + took another salamander. /I've found bothodactylus, still shedding green nest in a rotting log in cleared field. /No catch in 2 net all day. A few fluffy clouds in see. A local man told us we were at San Antonio, + that Frise Miranda was 2 canyons to northward. Biting gnats in evening. /About 8 pm. I walked for 3/4 hr. w- light, including elm swamp + swammy zone, but saw no species. Heard a frog (simple under) in stream. Calm. 7 moon see.
