(Journal (Guatemala trip) 8 April 1978 To Mexico Departed 9 p.m. on TWK for Los Angeles w/ wife Suzanne and son Cile w/ 165 lbs. gear + carry-on luggage. Took night flight of Mexicana for Mexico City, sun. 9 April 1978. when arrived 0530. Quilt thru customs w/o unspooling; had to carry apt. to Mericana debar, about 200 yds. Took 0800 flight to Mesa Guatemala, where arrived 0930. Minimal inspection again. Rented a VW Beetle from 156 km near Puxalbo- National Car Rental & drove to Quirici, where met Bernice Lewis, owner of ranch. Very jolly & friendly, & offered me 2 rooms. We walked much trails. Saw in evening apparent (other birds?) drinking away trees w/ descending scolding call. Set 5 live traps grum trope in and near grasslands to E. of road; Cile set a to W. of road. We slept in house. 10 April 1978. We drove to Puxalbo and Tuxtia for supplies, latter good. Returned to Quirici. Visited the Univ. San Carlos home at base of Quetzala; now a table & 8 broken thru, + 2 km. of carefully graded trail upslope into forest. In late afternoon drove up to Chilasco and Favin San Jorge. Still logging near there, & fairly dry later. Cile & I put out one net. Slept in house. Mr. Chilasco, Dpt. Baja Verapaz 200 m. 11 April 1978. Set up camp in old home frame to S. of San Jorge home. Drove to San setter? saw pigmya brighfisher; near S.C. canal. Chilasco and on to Santa Cruz canal, where a line of cypress trees. We saw 4 scarlet- tailed lates flying in gp. near Chilasco; another two near canal. Near San Jorge, I saw black robin w/ orange bill. Cile flushed brown bird from roadside bed, same as in March. Heard Trogon calls frequently. Walked 1 mile road circuit w/ tree. Helped Cile set traps + second mist net. Slept in tents; came rain at night. 12 April 1978. I departed about 0700 & drove to Guatemala. Shopped, changed to VW panel van. Visited Mario Diaz, & Prof's office. Met 3 UREP helpers at air- gate about 5 pm; Bill Dickie, Marsha Hunt, Jed Pearson. We drove in VW to Chilco and on to F. San Jorge in night. Saw 2 caprimulgids w/ rood up, + on road same. About 3 a.m. on highway to N. of La Comba I saw a large Catstler, which I killed and skinned. Arrived back at 1130 p.m. Family said it had rained early a.m. & that saw group 9 guetzala in day near camp.
