Jaerval 12 March 1978. Mr. Tucuru, Alto Kempoz Again told w. adminstrator. Apparently good, the road can be traveled to Rio Pannara and on to Penchela; possible to 2-wheeler truck in this season. / We walked down to highway in 1 1/4 hrs. Then Hawk - Bates-like: chalky grey back; white base tail + 1" black subterminal band. to Tucuru. Waited from 3-5 pm for bus, then drove up to, Telemar, arriving very late after dark. We camped in football field. Dogs & their barks continued all night, many roosters crow in morning; somewhat mosquitoey, but no people bothered us. About. 13 March 1978. Pampoz. Low morning mist. Left gear in lobby. Took truck to Feira Catolonica (15km); now bridge new, certainly 4-wheeler but possible. Met 3 Prorzo - Balsamo brothers; joining young bees- man w. coffee farm, at least 5 cabelleros; fully pat. fairly protective from cutting the coffee in much of it. Clara D. was a butterfly collector; collector in Puerto; known little of clonoplatina. W we took walk for 2 hrs. in the hill forest, from about 100' to 1000'. We saw + heard many birds, Trogon violaceus. Big toucan (Ramph- otos S. ?). Parrots. Formicavus. Saw large palms w. clusters of fruits. Said to be eaten in a palmita, say vampire wood horses. Say a puma taking children & dogs on neighboring farms recently. Say no jaguar now; orchet in mountains. Family many vises de roda (chinkajous ?). Marahy saw. Say a gray visis on N. side of valley. We saw several Basibacius, + orcas. America-type or Anding, near tail. Ever. say that rock goes into ntc. to about 1000m, up Rio Pannara + Tutolom; ix the 2 hrs. joined in us to lunch in house. Arranged to visit w. students. Interested in wildlife; the little family couldn't get. Had H. Land's book, B.of G., & said very incomplete for their area. But this most abundant in wet season (K. said; he knows
