Journal 24 Feb. 1978. Quetz., Guatemala. we talked w. 2 other officials, who passed back book to VA. Returned to city; shopped for mouse & rat traps, lamps, machete, food, etc. Then we took 1630 bus toward Qdan.; $1.50 to La Union. Saturday delay at Agua C. & El Rambo. Foggy to N. of San Mateo Guajolapito (San Maten? 2030. 25 Feb. 1978. Sat. Quisis, 5200'; Dept. Baja Verapaz. Calm, 1/10 clouds, sunny. Out about 0830; looking for birds. Little vireo? Saw fulvous headed flycatcher (E. fulvifrons?) and X. Wilson's warbler. 2 W. bluebirds. Hoarded jay, 3. Flickers. Centromium (landed fruit) w. woodstach bird, red rope & skin. Double (black glossy, lightning). smaller backbird. Heard Alauette to W. | Later, to E. of highway, visited fish ponds. Walked 1 mile on trail. Saw black hawk w. yellow bill & legs, but gray-black breast & belly, w. wide sub- terminal black band on white tail (Butorvialus?) perched. Saw a hunter, indigo a blue; mixed gray-brown + blue plumage, on ground. Another large hawk flying; whitish under wings & black band subterminal on white tail (B. ?). | Tadpoles, & Rana pipiens? frogs but no fish in streams (except in pictures). Back to house. | Expected Mario D. to come, but he did not. | Altos - sunflower in p.m. Prepared snare traps & set near bed (Vista Loma property) stream near Rancho Luisayate (10 small, 3 rat). Saw 2 apparent white- swifts in air; again, a few black swifts or some white antlery. | Mario and about 5 students arrived 3 p.m.; had been to the university nearby near Cunulco. We talked & walked 1/2 hr., before he had to leave. His knowledge of plants appeared to be poor; didn't know any color, or the difference between the 2 pairs in the tree that graysies fed on. But he said O.K. to collect rodents & bats at Loma's ranch. We put up net near Luisayate; inside room upstairs.
