23 January 1972.
Hotel Palenque there. The flat country all day drive was
studied with palm, cedar, & other trees - rarely cut down.
Some corn, some bananas, other crops. Many zebu cattle.
Lobos & sugarcane areas. At Palenque, small scattered trees
on flat - front estate at foot hills on both side of town.
Along del T. had said lumber there - local American company
had land more. Fellow passenger said 2 lumber cor. at Palenque, one
of them of big plywood company. Not tropical climate.
24 January 1972. Took 7 a.m. bus for Pinar (Pino), about 8
km. Free to walk and climb among them. Evidence of boote
rooting in some rooms, & droppings or food remains in some
corners. A few men were apparently guards, but very
indolent. Nearby a museum, not open at early hour.
One caretaker said tigrillos & loncillas seen occasionally,
but never tigre. Nor aguila. Said many people in
area, much shooting of animals. He said bowler song
yesterday morning to NW of the del temple. Also claimed
usual scentment of mambo - paco, mice de noche, etc.
We saw toconas, and some tropicoles along road. Walked
out about a mile to where camping area being leveled. Bus
block. Then to lumber mill near R R station, where man
in office said lumbering local and there were no
roads from Palenque into the selva - he said to go to
Trespinos. One local said cost 1500 pesos for plane to
