17 Feb. 1978. Fri. Rio Zarco, Dpt. Izabal, Guatem.
road to Patzite + Marinon. Alligators occur in rivers; hunt and
sell; $5 / ft. Ray zope (sarcopompha) now scarce; formerly more.
Pajuil, tiny mouse, perdy. E & J got some Kabchi women. Friendly
+ helpful man. Wife sells tortillas, scrambled eggs, sardines, sugar water.
We walked back to La Chirra. Talked w/ paludismo man, who said this
year over 200 cases in region. He had pills for cure. Truck took
us back (about 30 km) to Telcon bridge (Miguel Angel Ramirez, agrimotor;
livestock farm. Patillo has some veterinary stock help). Miguel told
(Klaus Dregue ?)
us of a farmer living at Fin. Contencion who collects butterflies.
Hills S. of Contencion appear relatively little cleared; C. Razon + the peaks
visible today, cloud plumes. I caught bus back to El Estor (1:25 ea.).
18 Feb. 1978. Sat. Little field work. Set out net in garden
and 2 on slope ½ mi NW near canyon. Saw gp. 22 turkey
vultures going over hill to N. in evening. At least 3
"tapacurros" at once on gravel road; many calls. The
EJK spec, archeologists brought Eriboea curiosa food, found w/ another shot.
3' underground on flats near beach. Eriboeas turn & stopped.
Mostly wrote notes on Zarco trip. No rain.
Sunday.
19 Feb. 1978. A Sternina ♀ (v. eur.) in garden net; EJK spec.
Other nets blank - windy at night. Slight drizzle morning.
Took in 2 distant nets. In garden caught a white-eyed vireo
on flycatcher (CBK & 4614, not breeding). Organized gear for
cK spec. move to Puerto Barrios area. Met up in garden to 9 p.m.; about dusk,
another white-eyed vireo in it.
