Journal 16 Feb. 1978. Rio Zarco Dpt. Izabal, Guatem. tail; black narrow mask, black remiger). Took trail up ridge to SE; descent faint, tried others; returned to clearing & camp. I am picking up log, I was sting on finger by 4" black scorpion; but no spe- cial reaction but temporary pain. Swifts - mainly entirely black, 100+ in high milling groups. Heard tinamous - I judged Tinamus & Crypturellus, or on B.C.I. Heard toucan trochil. Caprimulgids active in eve. Clear sky, no rain. Calm night. View of shore face of C. Piedad to E. (limestone largely white). 17 Feb. 1978. Saw several toucans, including big ones, green bill red- brown type, red caruncle, white rump patch, yellow face-throat-brest. Small parrots. Large woodpeckers. Big woodpecker (D. leucostigma?). Humming A birdy place at 0730 (lazy run). Walked back down to Rio Grande (bath- ed, & departed 0930. Saw small woodpecker. Returned to Buena Vista (star 11 a.m.). Saw 2 Leucopthornis circling together, saw swifts near them. /Saw red + black banded snake about 2' long lay trail in green shrubs. Fragment butterfly. 1300, arrived feature at Rio fish coll. fish) spec. (GSK coll. fish) Walked across. /Visited w. Ruben Patillo. About 45. One of first settlers at Buena Vista (most here only 3 years, few over 5). Claimed to have taken 12 jaguars, 10 pumas, in old days. Said small dark deer in mats; whitetail in low country. Good clear Spanish + knowledge Kechki. Consider for good man to hike to Jumun in 1 day. Can recommend guide. About 20 years ago, man + wife collected birds here w/ very fine shot (the bands?).
