Journal 15 Feb. 1978 4 p.m. Nr. Telemán, Dpt. Izabal, Guatemala. small star and of heat in line. Roughs to E. (Store had a green female cocoa or fava; raised from chile; also 2 grown black & wood ducks w. chicks.) Sper. citrus tree (grapefruit?). Some irrigated portion. / We walked E. an hour (talked w. Vista, of Finca San Jorge y Panama), to store of Rubén Patilla on his finca (he was away - recommended we come). Walked on to find river (60m, fair amount, rocky, clear; small fish below; said to have spices & macawara). Green veg.; palm roofed some houses with stilt, slab & dirt floors. Hiked up trail to SE; bushy second growth, narrow trails, frequent kékchis. Camped at corn husking shed about 500' elev. Monthly forest cleared to about 1000' level. Corn & beans. No rain. 16 Feb 1978 Rio Zarco, Dpt. Izabal Mist in everyone. Chickadee calls. Brown Jays. Turkey + chicken calls. Most flattened spots had remnant. Hiked an hour. Small store at Buena Vista (asked for agua; got water and coffee; ate in kay-lá. Then 5 open- dales. Saw maples, small teide, brasilier. Some coffee bushes (no beans now). Dry corn on cob in most rows in shucks; few bags from rofters. Many trails; often blocked + asked way. / 1020, 5' wide clear stream about 1000', about 400' above Rio Z. level, 1 km SE of Buena Vista, fish spec. shubby slopes; netted several small fish (EJK catalog). Air 81°F, water 74°. Trail eventually down to Rio G. 1
