14 Feb. 1978. Mr. El Ester,
cattle of plant we saw 2 herons, w. luck (? 165?), in tree
100m. away. (Plant man said a gir. trapped by sleeping around fire.)
Not muggy dark, dry, just no rain. / Visited Juan Calle, head of
local lab, in car. Received worm-like snake he had taken from
hill to N. of Cata recently. We discussed woodcutters getting firedwood
near Las Dentas. Calle said destroying breeding habits of some side-
side. Calle said that in 1952 only about 200 people here; now over
one thousand. He had worked at UC Riverside in past, on soil fertility
problems. Seems very cooperative. Good solid English. / Two cats out
at night. Temp. about 27°C. today.
15 Feb. 1978. Calm, muggy, overcast. One Vangapapa taken in
brush south on hill to N. Took in nets + prepared for trip to
Pongos & Toloman. Adolfo drove us to Pongos (br. 0930). Much cleared
and burned land to S. flat. Many Congo palms, a stand of African
oil palms. Many "living fences". Crotalaria frequent + some. Little agate.
Chicken woods on hills to N. Corn + Egypt corn (maizilla). Wide grass-
ed road. Agrostis green. Rio Calabaz 100 m wide, fast, milky (copper
mine upstream?). Pongos a small quiet town / Hopped a small truck
full of Kola nuts, including coconut & T., to Toloman (25). Insisted large
Ceiba tree. Cargo in pastern. Busy market in T. 1130. walked to river
(E+S + of center), when bridge under repair. Crossed 40m. river in canoe (5¢).
Tractor w. trailer waiting to haul people; none to Zarcas for an hour, so
walked road through 10' corn to Mina del Valle, foot of hills. Now got a ride
or side (on sugar cane or many loads). 1 hr. slowly to Pueblo Viejo on
Rio Tinajas (40m.). Think some linear stream. Corn, cattle. Many aris.
