Journal 12 February 1978. No El Estor, Dept Izabal, Guatemala to Marquette Univ., Milwaukee. 2 years here; maintenance dept. Met Dr. Juan de Dios Calvo, head of lab & snake staff; good English. Large job for faunistics for enzyme analysis; may be able to make dry ice; relative in law of Mario Dary. Men thought about 8 kinds of turtle here. Said porco morales sometimes in his Dukes. Mention fairly common; Morales said saw about 20 one night. They think four people from the monster, the M. said he shot one about 2 years ago. (N's Saturday hunting-fishing trip yielded only 1 large aguama, shot w/30 cal. rifle). /Later, in cafe in El Estor, I saw skin of Felis wiedii on wall; spots dark-brownish & little open; tail long. Said taken about 2 years ago in hills to N. /We set up not same place as last night. Heard Nyctidromus near lake in evening. 13 Feb. 1978. I saw among shrubs, a ruddy ground dove (Columba- palumbus) and a Cupheonia. (T. lauta) Not in garden took Antennaria caniflora, Darlingtonia patachia, Agave tequilensis & redstem hay 0900 (S. talpo- coti S, leaf full 2 mm., trigid.) Belonged on Ampelopsis. /We arrived in 5' wide stream through grassland and shrubs, 1/4 mi. W of lake; about 7 sps. fish, preserved. /I walked to cove & looked for garterine. Clear calm day; hazy. The plant puts out black under all day. /Cig, sat not at dock. About 200m. out in inlet, 2 or + nearly black short tailed birds, probably cormorant molting, swept past over water, back and forth close to us. bd. id.? C. carolinensis? No apparent light markings. Brownish black, dull, & rough wing feathers. /3 bat nets are out. 14 Feb. 1978. Too wet. Took only one bat (A. phaeotis?). Not took an Ampelopsis (dark bark, yellow leaves; redstem). We went on water samp- ing trip w. Alonga to mouth Cocodrilos Lagoon, water outlet & inlet from plant; off cote, I walked his house. Marquito
