11 February 1978. El Estor, Dept. Izabal, Guatemala.
25 w z. 165 hp engine. Saw tarpon rising in distance. Stopped in Rio Dulce at Cateman Island, near Ft. San Felipe & bridge in same situation. Some luxury boats there. Shore lake & river nearly all wooded. Came down trail to 5 secured woods on upper slopes. V.g swallowtail at Cateman (hotel garden). A large gray-backed gull. But no other kind of bird sp. except Frigate near Livingston. Boat Rio Dulce only about 100 m wide. Channel said to be deep, 30'. Some vertical limestone cliffs. Steep forested slopes w. some burned (illegible to cut trees). Livingston a small town, lumber center 3 blocks; old wooden buildings & rusty roofs; population largely black. No post office. Daily mail boat from Oco. Barinas. Small oil pumping dock of Chiribah. Fruits & basic supplies sold. Cacao on hangin to E. w. coco trees. Frigate birds over river estuary. We walked about town for 20 minutes, then took up Rio Dulce to Cateman Ldg. Lunch stop. Then one hour Lake Izabal to Coban, about 5 p.m. Orioles still feeding in gallito trees. Put out a net across next clearing in brush, to S of highway. Caught an antthrush in garden net, late eve (released).
12 Feb. 1978. Sunday. No rain; calm. Not held a pleurogram but + Anthra littera (jun. - released). Walked into El Estor. Bike went with and ecologist for day, & I went w. Tony Mackie (hunter on dock, 11 Feb.) to a Lion's Club outing at Rio Seco, a few km E of town. Did not see corn fields (grass can be 6'); some cattle. Rio Seco fast & fairly clear, about 7 m wide. Rio Seco slower, wider - said to be good smelt fishing at mouth. About 30 people came; had lunch beef, turtle soup, chicharron, beans, rice, & so on. Much talk. I met town mayor and several Guatemalan plant people, including Luis Ponce (large gp of estate in this area). Tony M. had gone
