Ford 3 Journal 21 January 1972. Friday Tuxtla G, Chiapas, Mexico Took train mine work and sketchings should be useful sign in jungle. Stayed at Hotel Esperanza. 22 January 1972. Visited archeological museum, bookstore. One book: Jataki - Urnasante (El Pais del Futuro), Pablo Martinez, 1971, 23 p., 35 pesos. R. Casta - Annie, Ed., Mexico D.F. about Laenderia? Herbert Kittleritz, Por Teinar de Laenderia. 1954. 349 pp. Ed. Nunes, GA - Mexico D.F. About Logos Laenderia adventure, inflatable boats. New Bonampak Hotel, auto sales agency had Chiapas map on wall - indicated projected road Tenejapa - Bonampak - Montebello. Apparently roads & lumbering are destroying last jungle in Mexico. Planned to go to Tehuantepec on new line - too crowded, couldn't get on. So waited overnight in Tuxtla. Market very good for fresh fruits & vegetables. Also dried sea cucumbers, dried whole shrimp. 23 January 1972. Took 0700 ADO bus for Pichucalco, about 41 pesos for 7 hour ride. Road ascended quickly into pine-oak zone. Mostly opened up except in canyons. Stopped in Bochil 1/2 hr. Some women carried earthen pots. Wore thin red and white dresses, blue shorts. Weeding roads. Finally came a summit, where was broadside, some clouds. Tepetate in a valley bottom, where patches of frost on same slope - perhaps 50% in some areas. Below, Eucalyptus common. Somewhat less frost as descended to Pichucalco, a hot small town. Bus to Villahermosa. Villahermosa already jammed. We, with 3 others, took a taxi to Palenque, said to be 3 hr drive, 60 pesos each. Driver decided to go long way, via Villahermosa - passengers ate thru - so yet to small town of Palenque about dark. A fairly good smell
