5 Feb, 1978 F/ Estor l. [label], Guatem.
Top of tree; spread tail as open shot note. Saw yellowthroat in
marsh near lake. Occasional black vulture mature. / With
Mark, went by launch to Ensenada Los Lagartos, 7 km to SW.
Lake muddy. Flashes olive, occasionally, to 100+ at times.
Occasional gull; fruit feed waters; b. atricilla? Also an orange-
hilled tern w mud-flapped tail, fairly large. I osprey. Occur,
caribaja. Common & many egret. Little blue heron (var. spiz)
arbor hawkins. 1 Mycteria flying. I Podilymbus gale.
A flock of large dark ducks w large white speculum-
Dendrocyga autumnalis; 20+ in flock. Large plover, broad-
tail size; gray & brown - nigricostrie ? Occur, 1-2 in trees.
Saw few peccaries at edge Cien. Lagartos. (This area a wild-
life reserve now, said Dany). We saw a 2' long snipe-
ing in inlet, later hopped on floating log. / One saw
big turtle w/ ridges on back; saw heads of 2 other turtles,
which dove, & one in dead stump tops in water. (The water
is white of manganese deposits, a streak in it black; apparent-
ly four fish in it (cat net + spine). Saw 10+ raft-
flying brown bats flying among trees over water. / We
returned to Las Darwin, saw Centrim (rupicolae ?) wood-
pecker in tree near lake. Hot Nettle seeds for DNA sample.
Nerve last not at dock. Two R-nose Ialau. Antilurus littoralis
in another net. (DNA sample tissues) (see EJK notes).
6 Feb, 1978. Strong wind. Adolfo P + Mark took launch to Palenque.
Not took Dumetella. Walked in grassy field near airstrip + flowing
stream. Cell biopsy for DNA sample (kept 1 spec.). Saw 6" Basiliscus, & a turtle in stream (Kinosternon; hinged plastron).
