C Koford 4 3 Feb.1978 Dist. / Izabal, Guatemala leafed forest, so fairly solid; pine above. saw green tree frog. Waterfall. Palm thatched homes (rambar). Limewater outcrops. Up to about 100' elev., then down to L. of Izabal. Planted rows of 50' trees w. 6' O leaves. 12-10 at lake edge. Air 77°; water 79°F. Some tree clumps to lake edge. Town 1/2 mile to W., where "ferry" waiting. Epuibol docks w. finish made 40x70' palm roof. Saw 3 Pitangus in ruins; yellowish warbler (2 sps.). Cormorants - approx. 100+ on lake. Pelicans - I or 2 sps. Sandpiper (small, wing bars), gull. Waited to about 1330; then launch headed for Estor; arrived 1505 at Epuibol docks w. palm roofed pavilion near the quings' colony. Saw farm. New shore seen green heron (yellow legs). Hills to N. had forest above 500'+; second growth below. But forest patches near lake. Univ. San Carlos lab (P.R.E.A.) next to guest house La Punta, a mile from our boat landing. Jose did not show up; we hiked w. our 100+ lbs. of gear, then got ride in pickup. Jose at the lab; living there w. Q. and Mandy, about 25 yrs., from Phila; also living there (here a month). About 40x80' bldg., concrete blocks, glass miami blinds, w. hot water, refriq., electricity. About 1/4 mile from edge lake. Saw glassware & chemicals. Estr. no aquaria or large glass jars. Jose took us to El Estor to shop; junks older stuff. Oranges 3/5¢, avocados 2/15¢. Prices high. The colony had its own line of stores near their quarter; a P.X. arrangement, not open to others. Put up but not near lab; set out 3 live traps. No catch. Saw a few bats in eve. We walked to edge of lake & with dipnet & headlamps got about 10 small fish, which
