near Motagua R., which was slow, muddy, 40-100' wide. Pte.
Quijo, broad valley to N. Flamboyant tree (no flowers), cale-
bash tree by road. Pte. Palmilla - 4' wide stream. Leafless
trees on S slopes - guamules - limbo? Rio Chiquito. Sugar cane.
Tucalutan - 6' stream, pte, town. Stopped at Santa Cruz for
restaurant. Melon, watermelon sold. Road said road N. to Sta.
Los Lotes older, 8 km., + one up mtns. to marmoleria - can
see it on slopes. He said "tiger" in mts. Le. 1045. | Jocapa rd.
goes S. Rio Horso - 50' wide, muddy; waterfalls in hills to N.;
town - green trees; oases. Then marguerite again. Occasional
Cathartes in air. Juncos pte. - fast, muddy, 10' wide; waterfall to N.
Switchbacks roads up slopes to N. Pte. Santiago (10' stream).
Pte. Alheta. To N., S. slope w. Leafless forest 10 m high, pine
about 500' elev. along highway (earlier 1900', near cloud line).
Pte. Arroyo. Motagua R. slow, wider. Mayanolas older.
Occur. oaks, willows, white. Lotes older & pte - 30' wide stream.
Km 179 Serradero "El Sauce" Some pines 200' above road (wet).
Occur. ceiba tree. Pte. Dña Maria; R. Motagua nw. large. Pte.
Mestiyo. Banana groves. Jocapa - Izabal border. | River de
Paz older & pte. Forest line of broad-leaved white-trunked
trees, 500' elev. up. (K192). Palms in bottom. Occur. 30' pine
mw. highway. Red slate rocks mw. large. | Valley widened. Rio
Motagua, wide meanders. INDECA mill to S. Palms, lowlands.
Los Amates town. Piñiques ruins to S. Some coarse grass
hills w. very open pines (rain - effect?). 1150, turning to
Mazatenango. Dirt & gravel road wound up wooded valley w.
