20 January 1972 San Cristobal de las Casas, Chis, Mexico
we found home of Bredehoeve, of Botanist of Cal. Acad. Arizone, about
3 blocks away. He was living with wife and 4 children, various
ages 10-16. Had been here 5 months this trip, previously on
other trips, so knew Chepian well. He said the great NE
of Tehuantepec, in extreme E. Oaxaca, largest semitropical forest in
Mexico, and not inhabited. Botanist Moraygol (sp?), Hotel
Istmo, Tehuantepec, said to know region. Bredehoeve also suggested
a ranch, El Real, of Pepe Rubio, reached for 200 p. by plane
from Ocosingo. Like E. of Ocosingo. There live guide Juan Bulmey,
of long experience. (Best pilot at Ocosingo, Pepe Martinez). Elizabeth
MacClintock of Cal. Academy was visiting at this time. We talked over
diverse problems and other matter. We stayed in Posada Ciudad Real
on the plaza (35 p. for 2). Many American tourists & cars in town,
including various microluses, long-haired donkeys, and coupes.
21 January 1972. Took bus at 11 a.m., a jam-packed load,
toad to Tuxtla Gutierrez. First visited Mercado, where good
number of Indian men in various costumes & low-
dumps of other along roads. At Turtle B., some kind of
political ceremony going on, so many people in town. We
again visited zoo, talked with A. del T. about Bredehoeve's
recommendation. Observed the Loto again - jaguar just stood
with rear near wall as he squirts urine backward, not even
raising leg or moving tail around. Also, he nearly immersed
whole body in pool, but made no attempt to shake after
