C Koford 12 Journal 23 April 1977 Mr. Chilesco, B. Vergaz, Guatemala walked down the small river. How tough walking in rain, about 5'80' after 3 hrs walk, truck picked us up + took me To La Cumbre. Took a bus down to W. de Soloma. Donuts then almost pure sand 30' per m. low brush under, few pines. A pretty area or other line (orig). Soloma - a sleepy small town w/ few stores or facilities. Cedar trees in groves. A "radio" in progress - still roped + sand down paved road; carriages ahead + 2 horses slipped + fell on the pavement. I departed on 5 pm bus for Guate. via El Linder. E. & N. slopes were low dense fog rain + cold mixture on slopes + might be suitable for study. Shallow below, 2500'; river ended - mostly sparsely vegetated brushes down to 1100'; columns + cholla cactus below 15,' big drilled wood trees near 2 fairly clear streams. Good views are Mazaten the crest of S.de los Minas, but too smoky for obs. of vegetation. In Guate, stayed at Hotel Suiza, 25Q ea. 24 April 1977. Sunday. I took plane back to San Francisco. Bob + Julie stayed for trip to Lake Izabal May 3, after a few more days at Feria San Jorge.
