there. Most speak in Indian dialects. Some migration at night, & many dogs.
21 April 1977: Smog still in morning. Overcast night but no rain. Could have
turned to El Estor + taken boat to Morazan, but did not - returned on June
toward Coban. Limestone hillsides & scarps, cliffs, near roads. Rain to 10 m.
and fairly clear. La Tinta market crowded, lively. Chile peppers from
families of
main type legume in gardens; nut worm from San Francisco, Calif.
Papalotz, green + stream clear, faster. Then really mountain toward

note Tres Picos, about 1700'. About 3100', hanging nests (oropendola?). Rain in
S. aspect slope, fairly pure stand. San Julian, + 700'; changed line & went

by Quixin (5200') to Centro Colonos (mail), the foot of Chilascas road
at + 4000'. Hiked up then small river. Then got ride in return pickup
from Hilberto Angeles, who had finca about 4 km E. of Chilascas. He in-
vited us to stay there, finca "San Jorge," about 6200' at edge of current
forest. Mostly thick brush near Chilascas, or occasionally a few forest
trees. A few houses + tiny store. Large coffee fields + many pigs, turkeys,
dogs. Hilberto showed us the dam + irrigation canal near Santa Cruz. He
said no fish & would like to introduce them. He said a road went about
15 km E. + up to finca zone of Sierra de los Minas; we saw no pine logs or
egypt. box, however. Planted cypress trees near canal. Many Lysiloma
tree. Alnus-like shrub (mosses). He planned to save about 3 colocation
of primitive forest at his finca. He also worked in Nuevotango in Centro
Frentista. He had bundles of seedlings of pine, avocado + other plants
to transplant in his area. Offered facilities + housed us small house
w/ tiled roof. Tall broadleaf forest 100 m away, partly cut, & current river
away. One road penetrated 5 km further. In evening I heard sharp calls
of a large owl close by; rather like more code, & apparent call of
smaller (owlet ?) owl. Hilberto said owls were freezing in Jan-Feb here.
