Journal - S. MEXICO TRIP 18 January 1972 Berkeley to Mexico City, D.F. Left Berkeley 0600, drove to SFO airport, sat 1½ hrs. in plane on ground before leaving for Los Angeles, San Diego, Mexico City. Arrived about 4 p.m. Fare $25. Had some good views of upper Gulf of Calif., but ground overcast most of way. Took bus to Metro, metro to Revolution, and ascended near A.D. Oriente bus station. Took 8 p.m. bus for Oaxaca (about $5, 1st cl.) 8¼ hrs. in transit. 19 January 1972. Spent about 2½ hrs. in Oaxaca until 0839 then took bus to Tuxtla Gutierrez (Cristobal Colon line), about 9½ hrs. Stopped at Hotel Meliá, a parada. Tuxtla G., Chiapas 20 January 1972. Visited Zoological Park and conferred with Miguel Alvarez del Toro, especially concerning jaguars and ocelots. He recommended area of Selva Lacandona south of Bonampak (Petro Vega in Tenosique could arrange flight), and mangrove + zapote del agua areas near Acapetagua, including Isla de Concepcion. He pointed out recent markings by jaguars (2-7-67, report) and ocelot (?) in dry crops. One jaguar cage about 25 x 50 yds., with central raised island + water pool. Prominent trails on ground where he walked around. A del T. said jaguars sometimes roamed at night, any time of year. There were 2 mares in separate cages, 3 jaguarundi. Also a few of most other conventional Chiapas mammals, some turtles, crocs - skinks, & birds, and snakes.) In afternoon we took bus to Blom San Cristobal de las Casas (about 4 pesos). Then went to Casa Blom, a big square white house containing a museum and various people studying Indians and archaeology, mostly Americans. Mrs. Berthold Dolly Blom was anthropological authority from 20 yrs. ago, especially dealing with Selva Lacandona. She was away. But
