CKford 1977 Journal 6 15 April 1977 Panajachel, Guatemala $3 each, OK but many flies. 16 April 1977. Visited Street again. Took 12:30 second class bus for Quetzalcoatlus. Arrived 5 p.m. at market area. Walked to Spring Hotel (13alle 9 aven. 2.1); room for 3 = $9. Tell very room w. windows to morning sun. / In night, series of 10+ explosions to E. & big fire. The customs house burned up. Hotel men said first run for about 12 days ago. April 17. Sunday. Sightseeing & shopping in Quetzalcoatlus city. 18 April 1977. Monday. Visited Schneiderman at Cholo furniture, av. 7. He had found a furor near Los Lores (Hospicio de Manantipán), said domestic commerce, colorful birds. He told me of Oscar Hartleben, who had Los Lores store at 5th or 6th callej zone 1. (Tried to call him - out), who had furor near Chichicastenango. / Shopped. Noted some blunt stoves & cartridge boxes. U.S. canned goods very expensive. No more evidence of new wildlife pelts for commerce. / Visited Ling. Mario Diaz at Polite- ic School, av. Manuell Cruz on Escuela Politénica (of many). He remembered me from 1972. offered to update letter of introduction. Said an American (Janson ?) was working on some sites in Lake Atitlán. Facts much reduced in later. S. de los M, much cutting of trees on 3 mile buffer on logging from INAPOR or amigos del Bosque. He talked of a quetzal reserve farm at Finca near Panajachel (km 156½, wood house w tile roof & tile roofed gate), belonging to Bernardo Lammers, where we might stay; another name "Benito." He said main for boats on L. Atitlán & can go to San Juan, Chichicastenango, or Chichipén. M. would like students to get field training. / He had plans for a reserve S. of Panajachel, w. around "colonia" (c 110 ha) offered donated by Soloma municipality), + mines outlying, emphasizing quetzal protection & studies. Mario very good naturalist & seemed cooperative. / Went to bus terminal + found too late for last bus to Soloma area. Hard rain for ½ hr. Stayed at cheap hotel ($2.50 ea.). 19 Apr. 1977. Tues. At Pizucula Barrier, 19th st. & 9th ave; took 8600 bus for El Rancho ($1. each). Then walked hill, sparse grass, rocky road,
