13 April 1977 Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico
again. Town of Ocozocoautla, no large buildings. More rolling country, fairly thickets, brushland. A dry said rain in June. Tuxtla - new buildings than in '71. Many new cars. Seemed prosperous, bustling. To Hotel Colon on main plaza. The cylindrical fruit tree in park now larger. Trunkles in them. In early evening, 10+ large bats (antelope?) swooped around central lights atop 30' pole in plaza. Some minutes flying there. Calm, warm night.
14 April 1977. To I.H.N. zoo. A new building of heat. Renos not, headed by Dr. W. Natterer &, orchid specialist. Talked with him. He said main problem was that Mexican needed food, lumber. Too many people. Only hope for wildlife was reserves. He had plans for 200,000 Ha. reserve in delta Lacandon, SW of Bonampak, where few inhabitants and not yet logged. Fairly flat wet zone. Later talked w. M. Alvey del Toro, who said that area suitable but plans only on paper or no funds for guards. "Vigilancia" poor in all Mexico. Said still jaguars in S. Lacandon, on S. coast, + Sierra Madre of Chiapas. One seen at a new Tabite recently. But somewhat depressed during last 15 years. He was proud of new acquisitions of 2 Oropendola or from S. Moja. Pair orioles in one large iridium; no reproduction. One jaguar only. But several grisons (vegetarian in daylight & said to turn red?), tayra, 2 yagouandis, agoutis, margays (shed antlers regularly), tepin, paca ands (1 white lipped). Familiar acquaintance. Both daughters worked at zoo. Nollott group displays in large cages. A.W.T. recently published Mammals of Chiapas (+ gave me copy). (Hot, muggy, + biting flies in Tuxtla. (35 min.) Departed 1345 for Comitán via Larras. Route past zoo + market. Fresh tomato - ends of forests, tomatillo fruits on trees, now ripening. Wide flood plain. Fort river from hummocks area. Living fenceposts. Road winds up through low deciduous forest to pine zone. Stream on mineral elevation. Brushland trees to 150' tall. Much thick mixed under
