12 April 1977 Edo Oaxaca, Mexico
w. running water, 5 m. wide Bambolindo tree. Occas. 2-3 Cathartes.
avocets. Up & down road. Near river left of green tree palm, corn,
mango trees. Small Tillandsia on cactus tree. Broad valley w. mango
fields (Mts. w. clouds low to E.). One higher zone w. small yellow
moss w. dried scales. (a few)
penis, very open stand. Smoky fires on mountain. Mtns of stele trails.
Near Tehuantepic, much thorns and "hues" - like mud probably mosquitoes.
Bus went to Delia Cruz, larger & more populated than Tehuantepic. Passed
a large lake to N. Saw no Crocodylus (the third in Tehuantepic when
I was there w. Pitelka & Reimer in 1950). In T., staring down old
market building. Hotel Doraji closed & abandoned. Town seems to have
deteriorated since 1971. Stayed at Hotel Oasis (ceiling fans; 130 p. for 3 in
room w. bath).
to Textla Gut.
13 April Market. a woman launched agave star or agave eggs, two had
10+ agaves alive, tied; Esh photos them. No birds seen market & few large
fish (jacks), but many dried shrimp & pompano-like shiny flat fish (nearly
fresh types?). Departed 1315 by bus for Tutla (54 p. each) as good as any bus
we rode to N. Stop at Juchitan, a town junction then on through flat country w.
dry brush, mixed often thick - arid country? Some mangroves, iguanas, doves.
Temperature stops, end of flat; mango orchard. Then mount ups into,
thus dry deadwood fruit. Several fires, much smoke. Trees to 10 m. tall. Acacia
Acacia, Cacta, & denuded slopes. Upper levels, open pines to 12" diam.
Portion of grassland, oak, rocky slopes. Pine & cacti alongside each
other. Network of stele trails. Upper land rolling w. some fenced &
grazed pastures. Spring brook + low trees, small Bambolindo. Clouds
are rare to N. Cultivated or grazed pasture fenced fields at times. Cactaceae
trees, then more dry pastures. Ascended again, deadwood tree, mostly
leafless. Bambolindo. Thick cover at times. Then level, rolling,
