10 April 1977 Sunday Mexico D.F.
arrived 0600. Airport - like bus terminal. Electric bus to Chapultepec
park. Visited Anthropology Museum, Mexican culture sculpture of gold,
silver, blood, most impressive to me. To Hotel JardÃn Colima
(3 beds, 210 p. total) near Zocalo. To Bellas Artes + Alameda. Ride to front.
11 April. More tourist gawping around Zocalo and Alameda. To A.D.O. station
up that period to summit, then down. windy roads.
(1st of late badweather) and took 1630 bus for Oaxaca; 115 p. each. arrived
modern
12 April at 0200. Small but good terminal. More tourists & busses than
in last winter's with Sue K. about (1971) & prices generally higher. (En
route stopped at small towns. Matamoros was impressive, clean,
was a fair in progress - ferris wheel, merry-go-round.) Visited market,
rich in basalt, pottery. Visited store El Colmillo Mexicano, a block S. of
50 corners of Zocalo; in 1971 I saw stock 50% velvet skin there. Still
cats many tanned skins including 15+ magpie, tarred, complete ones
selling at 100 pesos (<$5). Other stuffed: Few colati - perhaps 3.
Also tanned skin of otter, deer, puma, ferocity (role of many skins). Talked
to Joaquin Bergman, son of original owner. He said cats from mountains,
white in scarce now; taken w. traps. /Market rich in string & straw hammocks
shop. & straw bags. Much fruit, nice vegetables. Visited Casa Arena, where
leather goods + other cloth articles made on large hand-loom, dyed in open
outdoor pots. Ed: Bag squirrels in trees in Zocalo. A medicine - man
still had skins of tarponate, coati, raccoon. Brochier prominent everywhere -
now many nest materials. Vultures rare in town. Wooded mountain to E.
Departed 1 p.m. for Tehuacan (51p. each). Thru dry rolling country w.
maguey fields the main greenery. Then descended a long canyon w. eroded
limestone, veg. of open sky bushes, columnar cactus, prickly pear,
ocote, umbrella - crown tree (some w. yellow flowers) or silk-cotton
tree (Bombax ?). Rocky, cattle trails everywhere. To broad road at bottom
