12 August 1973. Panama, R.P.
said the black jaguar had killed 10 cattle, taken April 5.
April
13 August 1973. Went to Ingenio M.L. Talked w. Dany (Howard?), Belli
Baker student, who has been making a memento in lowman area of C. Z.
for a few months. He said has seen no evidence sets except for a wet
footprint near stream, possible jaguarundi. His assistant, George Barrett
Jr (?), said he had seen a female black jaguar near Almacito, Bocas del
Toro. / Monday said landlords there going to harvest and grazing. He
thought San Blas lowlands good for ocelots. Area of burning mainly
on Pacific slope, from mid Panama to D. C. Rica. Atlantic and E. Panam
was humid. / Monday accompanied me to office of Parques Nacionales
opposite El Panama Hotel. Talked about 30, energetic, recently back from
Africa. He said there is no control on hunting or effort, except for
official prohibition of some species, including jaguars. Said no parks
except C. Campana. Area near Colombian border has official protection
for wetlands protected mainly. He was aware problems due to of jaguar
depredation on livestock. He thought recent Washington conference would
have good conservation effect. He agreed probably much controls in
wildlife products to Colombia & was interested in Venezuelan Chiguire
program of management. He was especially interested in getting funds
for Panamanians to make a wildlife projects.
Returned to San Francisco and Berkeley.
