Journal 11 April 1973 Canal Zone gang off to N. from near Chagres River, Panama area. / Bale said that several ocelot born at Ft. Sherman zoo (Capt. Lollini in charge). There is small zoo at Summit Gardens w. ocelot, monkey. 12 April 1973 Tue 0700 Boat to Barra Colorado Island. Talked w. manager, Nick Smythe, others. Smythe said previous ocelot occasional then breed in trailer. He has taken about 3000 photos on BCI with automatic cameras but recorded no predators. Mostly agouti, posa, Procyonidae. He thinks about 4 agouti/posa. Agouti gain territorial; about 2 1/2 ha. per pair. / I discussed problems of automatic photography w. Smythe. / He checked dam & manning e.g. set up to measure water flow from 25 m. water shed in Lutz Trail area. / Essentially nothing in flowers. Many dry leaves in first floor & trail. We walked via Balboa Trail to Van Tyn Big Tree & Rock. Later to Town, AVA 12, back to town over Betela, & rock. Saw 2 agouti, 2 trogon, a jay, & a few small birds - also saw howler several times & heard them too. Saw no squirrels, sloths, antelers. Saw no leaf-cutter ants. I think area of palm has survived over last 15 years. I expected forest to be now free of small trees at eye level; but growing little if any, perhaps even less upon in AVA 10-12 area. Saw no tayra - Nick says not seen since - but 2 coati (Nick says too many near lab; come to garbage area). / Mrs. Cur (sp.?) had jaguarundi litter (said to have paid $100 for it) + ocelot kitten on island. / Barbara Parsons, "paca" farmer at Adel Dancy apartment. Dr. Robins (spell?), staff member, said many spider monkeys & other animals for sale at Darwin Compound, shops, by dealer Armstrong. / Paper
