Panama, C. Zone
woman, recently of Liberia, interested in jaguarundis & other carnivores (1½ kg?)
had been recording vocalizing calls on BC1. She had small ocelot cub, pur-
chased for $50. Halted by police. Mike Smythe, will go to BC1 with
him on 12 April. / In central market we saw skins of puma
and jaguarundi for sale. Dealer said ocelot skin would be $40-50.
Jaguar rare, expensive. /
11 April 1973. Briefly visited Gorgon mems. Lal., then Smithsonian offi-
ce. Went to Corozal, Environmental Health Div., to see Charles Keesey;
out, but saw collector snakes, insects, other preserved animals, $7000
freeze dryer. All thought ocelots in C.Z. but nothing specific. Also in
Corozal, to Veterinary Public Health office, where talked w/ Nathan Isale
& his Chief, Col. — P. latter told of ranch of Harry Daniels, Animal
Quarantine Station, Mendi, CZ. Own 10 yrs. had killed 10-13 jaguars
there, 9 on his 10 000 a. ranch, also one puma. (2) Some black
jaguar taken. Ranch along N side of E. ridge, off of Colon-Maria
Chiquita road, turning to E. a little S. of Rio Veijo Bridge. The Col. said
that "Felix" should leave
area several years. Hunter on ranch, "Felix," should leave
much. About black jaguar on Taganopolis ranch, adjacent to
daniels, about 1 wk. ago. / Pedro Miguel area, puma taken recently.
One seen mother First Nov.-Dec. 1972 (P. Cole). About 8 yrs.
ago, dead puma along pipe line road. / Recently 2 ocelots
killed by hunter on Pacific side, W. of canal. Also army officer,
Zaragga, said saw ocelot at road there, in Imperial area, at
night - he did not spread report as field operations would take.
Hunting goes around in C.Z., some by Panamanians; I hear
of clubs in zone. / The Col. (Vet.) said much logging roads in
(Darien - 3 towns & Tractor Trails. / Isale says hunts from road
