4 April 1973 Caracas, Venezuela
ably had jaguar sign. The Doña Paula area SE of San Felipe was plain
colon refuge, & hoped to include a private ranch to bring area to 10000 ha.
another refuge project N of San Fernando in E. Barinas, including primary
areas, area NW of Caceres in Guarico might make a National Park. He
said jaguar had recently seen on island at Maracito, near La Barca W of
(S. Guárico, nr. Urrao)
Caceres, & that rangers planned to hunt them. The Carlos Ploza road,
where hunt was planned, was in Guarico S of San Juan de los Morros;
same area where Mondolfi invited to hunt. Bruguez said animal pop-
ulation low in Territ. Amazon, much of it poor plateau soil.
There were in a "Selva de Humedal" extending in from coast; Bruguez
thought much of it would not be developed for agriculture - at least
large forest reserves would remain. Mondolfi had not read my Varg-
mela account, after a month in his hands - funny man - so copied it.
To Panama
10 April 1973. To airport and took Panam flight to Panama, passing
directly N of top of Sierra Santa Marta. Clear sky there, barren, some
blue lakes, and small snow caps; photographed. Rest of sky cloudy until
[= ?]
descended. / To Isthmus Memorial Lab where talked w. Monday. Asked
about nearby area to see ocelot sign, he was hesitant - mentioned Cerro
Azul. (Wolves or cats parasitic, rodents worthy). Then to Smithsonian
office & talked w. Neal Smith. He said black jaguar recently killed on
Pacific side, east of canal. He said that 2 in ammo dumps in Ft. Kobbe
area said fly soldiers, to have apparently lived in a culvert;
the monkey farm project there abandoned. He told of recent trip to
Panama in Feb. - at Volkerberg, he saw 2 jaguars come to pond
near house in evening, in spite of generator noise. S. part of
Surinam still in wet forests. Other thought ocelots through
Carol zone & even to C.I., but no specific mention. A few gray
