CBK 54 Journal 7 April 1973. Habana de la Cruz, Venezuela Dusty, laterly. Toolophotes (8 April). Saw at least 4 Terranum (cryptus?) walking on road in a burnt grass in woods; rather tame - last view I can remember. Fire made food scarce? Fire burning hard at 3 p.m. - at least 3 going on N part of ranch. Saw large Agamas taken on road. Sunday, 8 April 1973. We visited Los Caballer about 0730 but found no new nest sign. Later to Las Mulas - Myrmecophaga tridactyla on road; also Capybara, tho far from water. Saw green Agamas in tree. Saw a Cobra (sepsarius?) moving alone, in the in burnt forest. Found dozens of tracks of cat-like animal on roads, perhaps all of one animal (possibly a small, smaller). Tracks 5 cm. diameter. Extended a few hundred yards on road, but found no droppings or urine spots or scent. Saw pair red+blue macaws on bank 80 ft. up. Not calm day. Returned to "casa" about noon. Prepared to deport. Fire measured again in afternoon; Paul explored and said nothing but no attempt at all to control when fire nearly smoldering in early morn. of mate air. Took off about 4 p.m. Did square him on ranch smoking, & more on other reaches to N.E. Near Corazon, brown hills w. lighter bottoms of canyon + occasional green bottoms where apparently irrigated. Fire has probably greatly increased burnings of N. Venezuela. Corazon mi smoky as dryne. Caracas, Venezuela 9 April 1973 Monday. To Mardolphi's office - then to arrange departure & to El Pilar, when talked w. P.Trebbau. He had authority for proposed research centre near Urao in Tachira, to be sponsored by Soc. Physics, mathematics + Natural Sciences. This place would include compounds for studying research on cats, + (a tourist zone) deliver on tourist attraction + produce stock for zoo. Again looked at the zoo cats / returned to Mardolphi. There again met Alvarado & of Paris, heard there was park project along his house in Sierra Berija, which probably had pellets and jaguars.
