Journal 6 April 1973 Hato de la Cruz, Barinas, Venez. Ophaya tracks. But none of cats. Patches of dug-out burnt. Other parts, ground covered w. large dry crunchy leaves. Some pair of Are - said to nest near. At another route we saw monkey tracks in road dust. Color ? We saw 2 Alouatta in one tree; fairly tame. Another place, gp. of 4 including one with infant riding on back. Occasional woodpeckers seen on trunk. / Found only one pair of ocelot tracks in about an hour of search. / Went to a near-dry pond & mud sink called La Tapia (Loseya ?). A Canis luridus mud w. gut & body showing. Remains of peccary hide here. Myrmecophaga tracks in mud. At least 4 Big in one tree, about 10' across central "pond," which dried up, small fish. / Then on to Los Cedillos again. Found a few fresh ocelot tracks at top of water. Water for several hundred yards, about 50' wide. Number of dead cattle, piranhas, others on banks - extension. About 30 hostyias in each of 2 trees about 40' high; fairly tame, very noisy birds. A few more dead & dying cattle near edge caño. Black vultures in trees, but saw no living vultures. We found remains of Didelphis also skeleton of Felis pardalis (sound skull) on the dried mud. / Lastly, to end of caño about 1/2 km. to S. (also then yesterday). Fresh ocelot tracks in mud at top of caño. Water extends for at least a few hundred yards. Many hostyias in broken & true. We saw one Color (pole from capuchin) about 20' up in tree near caño. Woods very dry here too, but about 75% of trees have green foliage. Somaro is green; some 30 m. tall & spreading that wide. / Last night we saw many chiguires and cocora tracks, some of other, dug cavans. We saw one cream-colored Tamandua about 20' up in green tree resting in branches. Found no apparent jaguar tracks
