50 cyst Journal 5 April 1973. Thurs. Hato dela Cruz, E. Barinas/Venezuela "Tarzan" said he saw a small like "Toddy", 2-3 km S of camp cattle carcass nearly a in mud; apparently heavy boxes from this trap. Several dead pigs too - they seemed capable of going through the mud. We saw several Odosileus; at least one or with several points on bad antlers, one seemed unpruning; too many pigs & cattle. So back to airstrip + to 5. At home of "Tarzan", saw the cage about 5'x8'x3', where jaguar had been kept 3 years. Tarzan said that other jaguar traps had come to edge of farmyard area, about 100 m distant, but he had not heard roaring or seen the animals. Apparently others had somewhat inflated this event. We had many goats + ground brown beneath scraggly tree / We went on to area of Antonio's house. There a dry cave but one pond in dried mud bottom. We found no cat tracks there. Waited until dark. (New moon) Then looked w/ flashlight. A Didielphis seen & came to 2 m. to squeak. Later we walked up dry cave + back on return, I saw reddish bright eyes in near the water; animal did not stay quietly, so poor view, but at least for eight possibly an ocelot. We saw a few other yellowish eye- shines, probably of foxes & capybaras. But generally very poor in life - few insects or dead leaves spiders. Antonio said often ocelot tracks than sometimes jaguars / We returned to home about 9 p.m. / Two cross-colored frogs which in the bathroom; called loudly in middle night at least twice, not at least twice previous night. They can click on vertical walls. 6 April 1973. Friday. Strong calls chacalaca & howlers in early morning, about 6 a.m. We took jeep + a logueero + drove to La Mula, arriving 0700. Searched dusty road through "monte" for trails. Usual fox, raccoon, deer, ocelot. One set of Myrmec-
