Journal 4 April 1973. Hats de la Cruz, E Barinas, Venez. trunk ranch. Summer trails can be used to access El & Santa Catalina. / Paul says toucan rarely kill cattle. Probably feed mainly on the dead pigs here - also deer, chiguirin, lapaz, etc. She lady says on this ranch (16 yrs. ago), they killed jaguars. // Paul used to kill jaguar because they killed quail, but T. Blohm convinced him that jaguar valuable so kill snakes. Paul would like to introduce exotic gallinaceous birds. He said that white now rare. he said that a few years ago, beef and meat decrease build off deer but did not affect cattle. / We took fence inspection rider. Paul. In muddy pond of Cano Cascazo, a cow stuck in mud; about 50 meters, most all bloody, ponds interesting or ground it, we bailed it out. / In one pond we saw several Caiman (=babos), jocotes, chiguirin, a few turtles. Small fish abundant & sometimes jumped out into water plants. Few scalds also, sparrows, var- ious herons, cattle egrets, 2 red/blue jays, groups parrots, military turtledoves (?), snipe. Paul said two birds warbongs; bowers & "capuchins" (= ?). / We saw several vultures & pre-caracara feeding on fresh pig carcass. In general, similar to Hats El Veneno, but fewer deer, capybara, agouti, chiguirin. Said to be "drier" in western part too. / We met a man riding on motorcycle for about 1½ hrs. We came close to fog on road. Flushed several capuchins from road. Saw one w/ bright red eyeskin in top tree in grassland. / No planted grass - mostly tough Paspalum (?). / Hot day but a few clouds in afternoon. Paul returned to Casan about 5 p.m., leaving us with Toyota jeep, motorcycle, house, & other hospitality. Checkers called me home in evening. 5 April 1973. Chorus of owls at about 6 p.m. mostly tall.
