4 April 1973. (Wed.) Caracas -> Hato de la Cruz, Venezuela
smoking. Dry watercourse. Similar. We passed town
of San Juan de los Moros. Over Cajedes - some green trees and
less hilly. Mats caused many hills. Drierish grass flats.
Remains 5. Cajeds, & rolling. about 80% grasslands. Rio Guare
flowing well & green on each side for perhaps 1 km. - large
muddy pools water in area. Descended to ranch headquarters.
Some muddy caños and perhaps only 50 % grass here. A nice
house w. screens, generator, stove, refrig., stock of food forever. The
ranch 30,000 ha. Paul bought it 16 yrs ago - undeveloped. Now
building extensive fences to divide into portion. About 5000
cattle. Burning discouraged but several burned areas due
turtles (turtles), some said by outsiders hunting morocoyes
(turtles). /About 2 months ago, ♀ and 2 cubs at saw
carnage. Cubs captured w. lessons. Both dead, 20+32
days. Paul made them release cubs later. They came back
near Pancho's (man in charge) house. Now thought the cub
had left ranch. Most thought tigre also gone. One
worker said he saw tigre at close range 2 days ago
about 9 p.m.; three wooden hammers at it. Another worker,
"Tango," thought tigre came here to breed, then left. /Formerly
they had a captive ♀ near Pancho's house; he traded it for
some wine for forever in own ranch. /3-4 weeks ago wife of
(Caño Caceres)
Paul met tigre when on horseback a few times from ranch-
house. Brother-in-law (?) had met most close range & photographed
it. T radio seen within 100 m. of house. But recently one
saw last 3 weeks. Pancho told of broken along road for distance
