March
30 February 1973 Rancho Grande, Aragua, Venezuela.
But collector P. Antonio Bermudez showed me ocelot skin of one taken just
above (San Camilo area) in Feb., half grown, $5,700 grams. / B. said usually
hunt at night or light. Ocelot may stand farther cave toward light. The
Rio Grande area was hilly humid forest, similar to Rancho Grande, with
stream nearby. He said they had jaguar nose in San Camilo area. Previously
found SE of La Urbana in Bolivia. B. thought that H. Pittini park good for F.
wiedii seen as food in part (see Mondolfi comments). / E. Mondolfi arrived, told
us a 2 jaguar cubs captured & released on Nats de La Cruz recently; a q also
( + photoed) (by brother ? of Dr. Paul).
seen recently there. Probably we go there next week. / Later, discussion w.
Medina & Mondolfi. Medina thought only solution to protection jaguar was
large preserve, as in SW Guianas. / In U.C.V. collection, now at Rancho Grande,
2 F. tigrina from La Culata, Merida, 3000 m, taken in early 1940's. / Medina
let us go over confiscated skins. Two of jaguar. A mixed pile of 205
included 203 I judged to be ocelot, 36 F. wiedii, and 66 unidentified
(mostly fuzzy skins). Skins of ocelots to about 103 cm.
from tip nose to base tail (but about 35 across chest), skins of
wiedii to 69 mm. Many skins had no feet; many had
partial tails; some lacked ears or entire head. Photographed some.
No tigrina recognized. Many labeled Maracibo-Zulia, Caracas etc.,
presumably not smuggled into Venezuela. Much variance in
spotting among pardalis; much less among wiedii. / a
map in museum here shows location 7 ratl parks, 7 forest reserves,
3 mail monuments (like guanoa caves). / Medina said tracks of
jaguar seen at Chiriviche recently; moving me and to ask?
Mondolfi to notify us by radio when can arrange trip w. Dr. Paul. / Cool
& partly foggy most of day & evening. Few visits at light on
porch. / Sancho Garcia of Maracaibo said to have pets: 3 ocelots, 1 tigrina.
