from Caracas, de Fries suggested search for jaguar near Casa Larga, to E.
of Platand (our former headquarters). Perhaps chiquire shooting had driven
them there. | In about 1½ km of mango orchard (30 m tall) mixed with
(A. cinnamod ?)
other tree, we saw howler monkeys. Resident said they came about 7 yrs.
ago; gradually increased. Now are inf., one from last yr, 2 2009 others. They
stay in mango area year round. Rarely heard. Come to ground to water
trough for water. | Also in yard, about 25 imp in 50' tree, a Nyctibius

headquarters, where Weidmann was photographing. Indeed, recent remains in
water + on shore. In one corner, stakes, spongbills, and root ducks; all took
flight when I approached to 100 m. On a nearby shallow pond, dozens of
jacanas + a group of chiquires. | By noon, we received permission to visit
Hato de la Cruz on Wednesday. | A man brought word that "John" Hill, raised,
found near Agua Verde; we plan to see it + the Casa Larga area tomorrow. |
Much talk w. Weidmann in eve. As often, he said Gran Sabana now had
