24 March 1973. Sunday. Huato C/Brenes, Apure, Venezuela. b/w photos came near lim & water build 10' from shore. Two came from 100 yds. to return I tried to take b/w photos in evening light / At dusk, about 30 small bats (pointed nose & open look & one over each eye, teeth out mid-petagon) fluttered low over 5m. deep, stagnant pond. Clang roal saw on Duregion. Near one fish boat saw Delphin. Muggy evening. We camped by water in cano as before. 25 March 1973. Monday. Three fish boats taken; trunks indicated presence with fox also at one. Near the old scat tracks, 10' from fish boats, we found new otter tracks, (photos are) 7½ cm across toes, stride +50 mm. We traced these about 75 yds. in open bottom near small pools; no droppings or evidence feeding. / We walked up a tributary bottom, mostly sandy & bare about 5 yds. wide, some pools w. small alligators. Coke found an acupenda in one pool & saw a Cead w. white belly. He found several fresh tracks, 8½ cm. wide, of apparent cat but toes & pad more elongated than jaguar; = puma? / We returned to previous site & again saw several. One was rolled out, showing head & side, then another of similar size followed. One raised head out 5 yds. from O'Brien's slope to look at him. Later we gave great start of fin on tail about 10' from him as he sat quietly on bank. Bishop later said he thought there were about 6 in Cato 70, & that they came when he was lowering earth dam built at time of falling water, so landlocked until winter. A larger no. about 3 km. downriver to E. of Brenesian; heard two Perhaps 20 in the canos. / We saw one gnu. 50+ jolien stoke in front of Agua Verde. Occasionally saw a Breeking by roding grassland. We drove back to designation, or about out of gas & supplies. Apparently Chiguis hidden had been working w. of Agua Verde; we said he saw a tiger + dogs ago. They are moving its lateral area to hunt to E. / On to rados
