23 March 1973 w. Brazil, Apure, Venezuela
about 5 old cat tracks near a drying pond; 7½ mm. deep; toes slightly
lyme separated then joines; oval? Bird & capybara tracks dominate &
obscure other tracks. We swept dusty road & other areas along track.
We camped by water hole in caño. Bats out before dark. Noctyx especially
noisy. Found a Didelphis dug eyeshine. Caimans, bootys, capybaras,
others making noise all night; sometimes in spreading burrows.
A deer & capybara walked thru our camp at night. Accessible water
cano continues at least 2 miles over good dirt road, branches leading off to
S., or small ones through grassland to N. Capybaras dominant wherever
water. Tamar live - perhaps little hill? yet; often gave "alarm bark" but did
not flee. They & big squirrels can swim far & well under water; usually
submerge upon entering when frightened. But occasional capybara groups
swim across w. heads out, including juven. / In Agria Verde, Eike
found an anaconda about 4" diameter wrapped in brush under low
face of water; we could not make it reveal head or even move much
by poking w. stick. Only snake we have seen so far. No macaws
seen in this area; no macaws seen or heard. / Flushed a caprimulgus
from nest on ground in forest with two pale orange eggs. Heard some
calling in evening. / Capybara eyeshine dull; often taken for coati-
mulgid at larger distance. / Almost no marginal or biting flies.
24 March 1973. Sunday. Much bird racket in early morning. Noctyx,
hangfisch, anibis, Bellula perched in deadwood tree overhanging water
by camp. / Walked along edge forest, edge caño water, other spots,
& found no fresh cat tracks. But many of capybara, some of
fox. About 7 a.m. I saw a fox trot up the road, pause to
crouch. About same time I saw adult Crox chubutoni walking
slowly on same road, perhaps looking for food, for about 5 min. When
