Journal 23 March 1973 Hato El Porvenir Apure, Venezuela. Verde of Aqua Verde in woods along shore, Many piranhas up to about 10" long, among dead fish. In flashlight beam in eve often two or more alligator eyes seen at once. Quit about 19:30. Spent night at Casa PlatanaL. 24 March 1973 Saturday. We revisited several spots along Aqua Verde but found no cat sign. Caracaras consumed fish on bank. There are a few towers about 20' tall, put up for observing animals (old & non repair). Caught a fair-sized Iguana in 8" diam. hole in canal bank, with two others in hole. Turtles proved difficult to phx to or quickly slid into water. Alligators at darker here away, but spotlight distance about 50'. Pairs of 20' black & yellow-headed vultures in tree 7-8 a.m., apparently roosting, but saw no concentration at mammal carcasses. Mostly fed on fish near water. / Reinhot came; told me more water at Coto Salto + loaned us maps. We went there mid-afternoon. Some water holes 1/4 or 1/2 mile or more long + 20-30m wide. Few dead fish on banks. Fish in usual birds - also saw fairly noisy some litters, which allows approach to 10m at times. Noctyges, anhingas, cormorants, black herons - numerous. Spoonbills, egrets Mod-sized ibises in trees. Gallinula catching insects in air. / Many capybaras, some allowing approach to 10m. (10' or less in light at night). Many gpa 12+ included about 1/4 half-grown. Each chord + 1/2 gram across rumpa. When pressed, they circle back towards a canoe and kept down 3m. back into muddy water & swim under water. Some stayed under 1 min. t. appear mostly out all time day, often 50m at from nearest bush; rather tame / Found some feces 300-400mm long. Numbers in the long muddy pools, as at Aqua Verde. But more great bus - tree to 30 m. Much more calling of birds. In eve I saw a fox; we found many tracks, during them probably. Running along top of bank. / We found
